Charls-Emile’s sons’s, Adolphe and Emil-Maurice, renamed the company Hermes Ferere( Hermes Brothers). they develop the saddle making activity and extend the activity to leather goods and travel items. As the 20th century begins, the world changes. Hermes is witness to the end of the horse era and the arrival of the automobile. In 1922, the brothers decided to take separate paths, resulting in Emile-Maurice taking full ownership on the house. After trips to North America and Asia, Émile-Maurice’s vision for the company changed. With a forward thinking mindset at the forefront, worldly opportunities would be catalysts for the company to evolve and diversify. He comes back from his different journeys with the exclusive patent for the zip, for both leather goods and fashion. He will be amongst one of the first to introduce it to France. Travel is now added to the house’s roots as a source of inspiration for Hermes. In just half a century, numerous metiers were developed: The Haut a Courroies handbag is introduced in 20’s to accompany horse riders: bag in which one stores his saddle and equipment. The straps allowed the bag to be closed. In 1937, the first silk scarf “Jew des Omnibus et des Dames Blanches”, inspired by the play mat, sets the tone of what would be the printed silk scarves in Hermes. In 1938, the legendary Chaine d’Ancre bracelet (anchor chain) was created and will become our emblematic jewel. In 1949, the Collier de Chien belt (dog collar) enters the Hermes collections. |
