An engineer should be perfectly familiar with the properties of materials and the conditions under which the member works. Some of the properties are specific heat, thermal conductivity, coefficient of expansion and others. These characteristics are called physical properties. Those properties which describe the behavior of materials under mechanical usage are called mechanical properties. The fundamental notions for Strength of Materials are the following: deformation, elasticity, plasticity, ductility, brittleness, stress and strain. Elasticity is the ability of a body to recover its original form and sizes after unloading. The property of breaking without permanent deformation is brittleness. |
