In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid growth of technology. While some innovations bring automation to our daily lives, others have increasingly overloaded our cognitive capacities. On the one hand, we have automated many mundane tasks such as washing, cleaning, and cooking, or simply made these processes more efficient and faster. It is clear from the evidence that such automation allows us to dedicate more time to personal pursuits and leisure activities. Furthermore, many technological solutions simplify routines and reduce physical effort, which enhances overall productivity. On the other hand, it is important to recognize that modern technologies often demand substantial knowledge and attention. We need to understand which detergent or cleaning solution is suitable for our washing machines and how to maintain them properly. Occasionally, we struggle with leaks, malfunctions, or system errors and must call a plumber or electrician. Similarly, modern cars have become highly complex. Although it is impressive and undeniably high-tech, even minor tasks often require professional assistance, leading us repeatedly to service centers. As an electrical engineer, I am generally a strong advocate of technology. However, recently my smart home system malfunctioned, causing the lights to blink every second throughout the night. I could not stop it without shutting off the power for the entire apartment. Consequently, I replaced the smart switches with conventional ones. This experience highlights the fact that technology can complicate our lives, and it is essential to maintain a careful balance between benefits and drawbacks. |
