| 1 | Weighing votes? Judging by my own experience, reputation counting is far from perfect. Mine has been growing mostly thanks to answers to easy questions which I've been lucky to be first to read. Disappearing Question Yesterday there was a question about solving the functional equation f. It was closed as "unclear what you're asking" when the OP A blog for MathOverflow Amongst the moderators we've recently been discussing starting a blog for MathOverflow. The immediate goal is to have a good place to describe the current 'institutional setup' of MathOverflow On: Graph Theory is the sum of Topology (?) Recently a question got asked that effectively asked for the origin of the quote "Graph theory is the scum of topolgy" indicating it might not be the exact quote but something along these lines. Is there a way to learn when MO leads to actual results? Where can I find information about MO activity which led to progress in somebody's research? E.g. is there an efficient way to cite MO contribution in a paper in such a way that it will be easily Eventual archive of the UFO? For quite a while now MO has been treated to missives posted from, it seems, a representative of the galactic government who would like to share knowledge of time travel. Difference between Mathematics Stackexchange and Mathoverflow Stackexchange? I did not get mathoverflow website. Which question should I post in this site? More often I post questions but they get closed because out of scope or out of subject. What are the kind of question. Failed migration? What happened to this question? When I saw it in the review queue, it had 3 votes to migrate to MSE, and 1 vote to close (Yemon's custom reason). But after I cast the last vote to close, it is now put. Enabling MathJax over https MathOverflow (and indeed all the StackExchange sites) support https connections. However MathJax is currently broken, because the default server for the MathJax distribution doesn't support https. Why this question is off-topic? Given an even function how to obtain the most close odd function and vise versa? Why it was closed? Is it a problem if I post a lot of questions? The fuel of MO is the research level questions in mathematics. In most (regular) users' summary I look, there are much more answers than questions, as if the opposite position would be doubtful. How do people determine if other people's questions are research level or not? I post a question here: on convexity of function in C1 (now deleted). Obviously, those who closed it think it is too elementary. But how do they know if it is research level or not? Should this site be "a shortcut to substitute for literature searches"?
